Janet Warren

I know this is not the Christmas season, but when I look at this photo I see ‘comfort and joy’. I love this photo by Janet because it embodies two things that have been so important for most of us, I think, during this long, last year. We have needed many moments of comfort and joy to sustain us and to take care of ourselves.

Soft socks are comforting – they keep us warm, they protect us from blisters, they make walking in shoes more comfortable. I feel like writing an ‘Ode to the Humble Sock’ – but this will have to wait for another time! What has provided comfort to you over the last year?

The mini-magnums are pure joy – sweet and tasty, they offer a mini moment of happiness and contentment. I’m afraid there have been rather too many little treat moments for me over the last year, given the sweet tooth that I have. But you know what? I have tried not to be too judgmental towards myself because this year has been so stressful and hard for so many of us. We have needed these little moments of sweetness, when so many other moments of potential joy have not been possible. What has brought you mini-moments of joy over the last year?

Dear Lord, we praise and thank you for being a God of comfort and joy. Thank you for being with us during the last year. Remain close to us as we journey onwards towards an uncertain future. Amen.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. (2 Corinthians 1:3-5)
