When we were in the Lake District several years ago we were fortunate enough to grab a picture of the mountains reflected in Derwent Water, and I was reminded of this when I saw the photograph that Yo had taken of the spire of St Mary’s reflected in a puddle. Now the former picture spoke to me of the grandeur of nature, of the beauty of God’s creation and the power of the creator, the power of our creator.
But Yo’s picture had an even greater impact on me, the amazing spire of St Mary’s, reflected in all its splendour, in a muddy puddle. This made me think about how we, in our own small, imperfect way, reflect the love of God in the world.
2 Corinthians 3:18 says “But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” We have been created in the image of God and therefore we are a reflection of God our creator. But sometimes we may find this truth difficult to accept. We question whether we are good enough, we worry about the things we may have done wrong or the habits that we dislike, we may feel a failure or have allowed others to make us feel so. We may feel that we have nothing to give or that our lives are too small and insignificant.
But this is where Yo’s picture really struck a chord with me because we don’t have to be a great lake to reflect a great truth, but as God’s creations we still reflect the glory of God even if we feel like a small muddy puddle.
No matter how ‘muddy’ we may feel we are still a reflection of God.
- We are a reflection of His image:
Genesis 1:27 “And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
- We are a reflection of God’s work of redemption.
Romans 3: 23-24 “ for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.”
- We are a reflection of God’s love:
1 John 3:1 “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! “
- We are a reflection of God’s glory:
2 Corinthians 3:18 “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.”
Lord, may I see Your glory and the glory that You have bestowed upon my own soul. May my eyes forever remain fixed on that grace. May I see You and Your glory especially in difficult times. Jesus, I trust in You. Lord, have Your way in my life so that I may better reflect your glory and beauty. Amen
